Fixes Issue:

164061 - Low battery warning on taskbar is missing. Control panel applet for power status does not show correct status. Pop up warning dialog for dead battery doesn't show.

Released:

October 16, 2007.

Issue Details

Installation of the patch fixes the firmware to allow low battery level indication to show on the taskbar and a pop up dialog that warns when the battery is dead.

The QuickPanel Control and QuickPanel View models affected include 512 kilobytes of static random access memory (SRAM) that is connected to a battery. The battery preserves the contents of SRAM when power is removed from the QuickPanel.

In the QuickPanel Control, controller state values will be lost if the battery is dead and power is removed during a power loss or power cycle. This condition may lead to an undesirable operation of the controller on startup or setting of I/O initial values.

For both QuickPanel Control and QuickPanel View, values of retentive variables will be lost if the battery is dead and power is removed.

State or retentive variables stored in SRAM operate and are saved properly across a power cycle when the battery is good. The QuickPanel battery is a non-rechargeable 3.3V lithium battery with an approximate lifetime of 5 years.

Installation Instructions

To determine which firmware version you have installed, run the System Information utility (Start / Programs / System / System Information) and note the second text line in the dialog. If the firmware version is v2.00.0026, then this patch is needed to resolve the issue identified above. See the section below for instructions on how to confirm if this patch has already been installed.

Installation with CF Card:

  1. Copy the patch file "patch_10122007a.CAB" onto a CF card.
  2. On the CE unit, stop all running applications (such as Proficy Machine Edition).
  3. Then insert the CF card with the patch, open windows explorer and copy the patch file from from the CF card "\PCFlash Storage\patch_10122007a.CAB" to the root folder "My Computer\patch_10122007a.CAB".
  4. Install the CAB file by double clicking the one in the root folder: "My Computer\patch_10122007a.CAB".
  5. Accept the default file location for installing the patch by pressing the 'Enter' key with either SIP or USB keyboard, or tapping the 'OK' button.
  6. Acknowledge the dialog that informs you that a reboot will occur after the patch installs.
  7. Observe that the patch installs and the unit reboots.

Installation without CF Card:

  1. On the CE unit, stop all running applications (such as Proficy Machine Edition).
  2. Make an ActiveSync connection to the unit to be patched.
  3. Through explorer, copy the patch file "patch_10122007a.CAB" from the PC into the root folder "Mobile Device\My Computer\patch_10122007a.CAB" of the CE unit.
  4. Disconnect ActiveSync once the file is copied.
  5. On the CE unit, install the CAB file by double clicking the one in the root folder: "Mobile Device\My Computer\patch_10122007a.CAB".
  6. Accept the default file location for installing the patch by pressing the 'Enter' key with either SIP or USB keyboard, or tapping the 'OK' button.
  7. Acknowledge the dialog that informs you that a reboot will occur after the patch installs.
  8. Observe that the patch installs and the unit reboots.

Verifying the Patch is Installed:

Browse to the folder "\Flash Storage\OS_Patches", and execute the Patch.exe program. It will scan the CE unit for installed patches, and list them in a dialog.

Special Note for Resetting the CE Unit:

If it becomes necessary to have the unit reset to factory shipped condition, this patch will need to be re-installed.

If you are resetting the unit to remove any downloaded Proficy Machine Edition project, be careful to not delete the "\Flash Storage\OS_Patches" folder. If this happens, you will need to re-install this patch.

Special Note for detecting low battery condition within a View Application:

Machine Edition projects can use the status variable #BatteryStatus to detect low or dead battery conditions. See the online help in Machine Edition for details on how this variable works.

Note that this variable works correctly even on an un-patched system.
